DIY Outdoor Fireplace Kits
Firepit kits – Fireplaces are popular with home buyers. The fireplace evokes a sense of nostalgia, comfort and family and helps the buyer associate those feelings with their new home. One way to create the shell that you want is to use a mantel kit that is designed for easy installation by a handy homeowner. Measure the height and width of your fire box. Measure the height and width of the fireplace surround and hearth. The surround may be a floor to ceiling wall of bricks or it can be 18-inch marble tiles surrounding the fireplace. Measure the width of any restrictions close to windows or cabinets.
Purchase and install your mantel kits. Typically the kit will consist of the upper mantle, and two leg. All the pieces are hollow. The top will be attached to the legs using simple brackets and screws that will be provided in the kit. Place the assembled mantle centered over the fireplace kits. Place a level on top of the jacket to ensure that it is straight and level. Draw the outline of the jacket on the wall. This will be a guide when you install the mantle.
Place the shell side down on the floor. The jacket will attach to the wall with cleats. A cleat is a bit of the 2-by-4-inch board cut to fit within the hollow portion of the shell top and each leg. Measure the hollow area. Cut your 2-by-4-inch board and align the upper part of the firepit kits. The top board of the mantle will rest on and bolted to the cleat from the mantle top.
